It only €1.45 to get from the airport to central and takes only 17 minutes so do not get a taxi. It is not quicker.
You need to get a card which you keep and top up. This is dispensed from the machine and costs €0.50.
There are only a few lines so it is easy to get around and is best to check this map.
There are many hill so heels don't really work and you need strong legs and knees otherwise you can get taxis or tuk tuks which are pretty cheap.
Beach
Go to Cais do Sodre station, head to Estoril, top up your travel card with about 5 Euros, if there are queues upstairs then head down the escalators as there are loads more machines to top up down there. It takes 40 mins to get to Cas Cais. Both beaches have towns with lots of restaurants so you can grab lunch or dinner there. Both are nice and maybe the waves are smaller at Cas Cais but the beach is busier.
